Practical advice, not theory

Founded in Glasgow in 2014, Business Innovation Advisors grew out of a simple frustration: too many consulting firms hand over a slide deck and disappear. We stay through implementation. Our team of nine advisors brings direct experience from manufacturing, fintech, logistics and professional services. That means the recommendations we make have been tested in real P&L environments, not just academic case studies.

We work with owner-managed businesses turning over £2m to £50m. Most engagements last between three and nine months. By the end, our clients have a measurable improvement they can point to: a shorter order-to-cash cycle, a restructured sales pipeline, or a leadership team that finally operates from a shared set of priorities.

Our office sits in central Glasgow, but roughly a third of our projects are with companies elsewhere in Scotland and northern England. We travel to you. The initial diagnostic is always conducted on-site because spreadsheets miss what a factory walkthrough or a day shadowing your sales team reveals.

Six areas where we make a difference

Strategic planning

We facilitate a structured planning process that produces a 12-month action plan with named owners, deadlines and KPIs. No vague mission statements. The output is a working document your leadership team reviews monthly, not a binder that sits on a shelf.

Financial performance

Margin erosion often hides in plain sight: pricing that hasn't been reviewed in three years, supplier contracts auto-renewing at outdated rates, or overhead allocated so broadly that no one knows which product lines actually make money. We find those leaks and plug them.

Operational improvement

We map your core processes end to end, identify bottlenecks and eliminate the steps that add cost without adding value. Past projects have cut average fulfilment time by 35% for a Glasgow-based distributor and reduced rework rates by half at an Ayrshire manufacturer.

Leadership coaching

Growing companies often outpace the management skills that got them started. We run one-to-one coaching programmes for MDs and department heads, focusing on delegation, difficult conversations and financial literacy. Each programme runs for six months with fortnightly sessions.

Sales and growth advisory

We audit your sales pipeline, CRM data and conversion rates, then rebuild the process around the metrics that matter. For one Edinburgh SaaS firm, this meant reducing the sales cycle from 94 days to 51 and increasing average deal size by £8,000.

Digital transformation

Technology for its own sake wastes money. We assess which tools your business actually needs, manage the vendor selection and oversee implementation. Recent projects include ERP migrations, automated reporting dashboards and CRM integrations for companies with 20 to 300 employees.

Four stages from diagnosis to measurable change

01

Diagnostic

We spend two to three days on-site: interviewing your team, reviewing financials, observing operations. The output is a written diagnostic report with prioritised recommendations, typically delivered within ten working days.

02

Scope and plan

Together we select the two or three initiatives that will have the biggest impact relative to effort. We define success metrics, assign responsibilities and set a realistic timeline. No open-ended retainers.

03

Implementation

Our advisors work alongside your people. We attend weekly check-ins, troubleshoot blockers and adjust the plan as real-world data comes in. This phase usually lasts between eight and twenty weeks.

04

Review and handover

We measure results against the original targets, document what changed and train your team to sustain the improvements without us. A follow-up call at 90 days ensures nothing has slipped.

What our clients say

"They identified £340k in margin leakage within the first fortnight. By month four we had recovered most of it through renegotiated supplier terms and a revised pricing model. Genuinely useful work."

Fiona Caldwell, MD — Clyde Precision Engineering

"Our sales team went from guessing to knowing. The pipeline rebuild they led gave us visibility we never had, and our close rate jumped from 18% to 29% in one quarter."

Ravi Sharma, Commercial Director — Helix Software

Frequently asked questions

How much does a typical engagement cost?

The initial diagnostic is a fixed fee of £2,500 plus VAT. Implementation projects are priced per phase, usually ranging from £8,000 to £35,000 depending on scope and duration. We always agree costs before work begins.

Do you work with startups?

Our methods are designed for established businesses with at least two years of trading history and a turnover above £2m. Early-stage startups benefit more from accelerator programmes, and we can point you to several good ones in Scotland.

Can you work remotely?

The diagnostic phase requires on-site access. After that, a mix of on-site and remote works well. We use shared project boards and video check-ins to keep momentum between visits.

Which industries do you specialise in?

Manufacturing, professional services, technology and logistics make up about 80% of our project history. The remaining 20% spans hospitality, construction and healthcare. If your challenge is operational or strategic rather than sector-specific, we can probably help.

How quickly can we start?

We typically schedule the diagnostic within two to three weeks of the initial conversation. Implementation timelines depend on internal readiness, but most projects are underway within six weeks of first contact.
